Designing a Garage Door to Match Your Home

Design Ideas and Inspiration

Your garage door should support the overall design concept of your home, not compete with it. The overall design style of your home should be considered before choosing your garage door. Once this is established, consider the look you want to achieve.

Below are examples of common home styles and the garage door designs that best complement them.

Gliderol Sectional Door Designs

Traditional Home Design

Traditional home design draws inspiration from classic architectural styles, emphasising symmetry, proportion, and timeless detailing. Colours tend to be warm or neutral.

Garage Door Styles:

  • The Gliderol Essentials Series sectional doors with a Madison or Oxford profile work well in a traditional design. The embossment features add additional character to the home.
  • Consider adding windows to these profiles for more architectural character. And beyond aesthetics, windows allow natural light into the garage.
  • For older renovated homes with smaller garages, the classic Roller Door will still suit the design. For a cleaner look, you can remove the centred manual lock and include a Gliderol motor.

 Colour Suggestions:

  • Choose classic Colorbond® colours like Surfmist®, Basalt® or Dover White® to either stand out or blend in with the façade materials on the home.

Modern Home Design

A modern exterior design is defined by clean lines, strong geometry, and a restrained, intentional use of materials. Colour palettes are typically neutral often featuring whites, blacks and greys to create contrast without visual noise.

Garage Door Styles:

  • For those with a higher budget, consider real timber that can either stand out or blend in with the surrounds of the garage door. The Danmar Verti Panels  feature premium natural cedar vertical boards sealed, oiled or painted.

 Colour Suggestions:

  • Choose classic Colorbond® colours like Dover White®, Basalt® and Monument®. Or for a matte finish, the Platinum Series colours in Zinc Graphite, Silver Quartz or Midnight Matt.

Contemporary Home Design

Contemporary home design includes current architectural trends while emphasising clean lines. Exteriors often blend modern simplicity with subtle detailing, using a mix of materials such as glass, metal, wood, and stone to create contrast and visual depth. Colour palettes are typically neutral with occasional bold accents, allowing the architecture to feel fresh yet balanced.

Garage Door Styles:

  • Consider specialty garage doors from the Selections or Danmar ranges with premium materials including solid acrylic, aluminium or glass.
  • While these homes suit the specialty doors, for a lower budget option the Gliderol Essentials series  will still work perfectly on contemporary homes. Consider a statement colour and try a clean looking profile in either Madison or Tuscan.

 Colour Suggestions:

  • Black glass can make a statement and add a modern touch on a contemporary home.
  • When it comes to aluminium, greys and black work as a statement or can blend in with other statement architectural features.
  • For the Essentials range, try a Colorbond® colour like Nightsky® to make a statement. Or choose from the Platinum sectional door colours for a sleeker look.

Farmhouse Home Design

The Farmhouse home design blends classic rural character with refined, modern sensibility. Colour palettes often include whites and soft neutrals with warm wood tones or dark accents. A modern farmhouse design is a combination of farmhouse features on a modern home design.

 Garage Door Styles:

  • Consider real Danmar Timber garage doors styles including the Carriage Panel or Barn Panel design.
  • Consider adding windows for additional depth in design and if you need natural light in your garage.

Colour Suggestions:

  • Timber Doors can be painted. For a white home consider a ‘raw’ finished timber door and then paint it white to get a crisp look.
  • A modern look can be achieved in a grey barn style door.
  • For a more traditional look, consider a stained natural door.

Unique Architectural Home Design

Unique home designs move beyond a single architectural style, blending elements, textures and structural elements to create a one-of-a-kind exterior. In these homes, the garage door is often more than a practical feature. It can become a key architectural element that enhances the overall design.

Garage Door Styles:

  • The Danmar range is perfectly suited for architectural style homes. Our team can work alongside architects and designers to create a custom garage door design that complements distinctive features and elevates the home’s overall aesthetic.
  • Consider materials like aluminium and real timber. These materials add visual interest and can either blend in with the architectural elements of the home or stand out as a design feature.

Colour Suggestions:

  • Bold, dark colours can create a dramatic statement and highlight the garage door as a design focal point.
  • Alternatively, softer warm tones can provide a more subtle, refined look. Light timber finishes or grey aluminium are excellent choices that complement modern architectural styles.
